The community was extremely tolerant, promoting women’s rights, the abolitionist movement, and helping your fellow man. Education was also a town priority, with the first school built in 1856 and the first college founded just ten years later. This was the beginning of what would become the city’s legacy, and to this day the community boasts multiple institutions of higher education. Now, Northfield is a thriving city with a population of just over 20,000 residents.
