Elko New Market is a city that was once two separate communities. The former city of New Market was incorporated in 1865. The small community included a post office, and several other small businesses. Elko, on the other hand, was not incorporated until 1949, but was better connected to greater Minnesota and other communities through the Chicago-St. Paul railroad. Talks about a possible merger began in 2005, but did not become office until January 1, 2007. Since then, the city of Elko New Market has grown into a community of over 4,000 residents.
